Date/time of incident: may 1, 2025 – 2:00 pm location: highway 544 merging onto highway 501 northbound, Waccamaw River bridge area suspect vehicle: dark-colored Chevrolet Traverse, white male driver, white female passenger At approximately 2:00 pm on May 1, 2025, a male driver operating a Chevrolet Traverse with a female passenger was observed driving in an unsafe and aggressive manner beginning on Highway 544. The Traverse was first seen exceeding the posted speed limit (traveling 50+ mph in a 40 mph zone). The driver then entered the merging lane to connect to Highway 501 northbound and began attempting to cut off multiple vehicles. Upon merging onto Highway 501 northbound, the Traverse driver continued to operate his vehicle aggressively, cutting off multiple vehicles and school buses. He was observed tailgating vehicles at a dangerously close distance—less than two feet from other drivers’ bumpers—attempting to intimidate them into moving faster despite high traffic and already elevated speeds (55+ mph). As the suspect vehicle passed an auto dealership on the left side of the highway, it changed into the left lane and sped up to pass the same vehicle it had been tailgating. Upon reaching the highway 501 bridge over the Waccamaw River, the Traverse cut back into the right lane extremely close in front of the vehicle it had just passed, nearly causing a collision. This maneuver placed the suspect vehicle behind a massive truck. The Traverse driver then engaged in deliberate and dangerous behavior designed to provoke or cause a collision. He repeatedly slammed his brakes and used windshield wiper fluid to obstruct the vision of the driver behind. These actions appeared to be intentional, with the driver attempting to box in the vehicle he had cut off, creating a highly hazardous situation. Upon realizing the vehicle behind had a dashboard camera recording the incident, the Traverse driver ceased the aggressive tactics and continued driving. This incident occurred on the highway 501 bridge over the Waccamaw River, during high-traffic conditions and in the presence of two large trucks and other commuters, who were already driving unsafely. The suspect’s actions posed an immediate risk to public safety and could have resulted in a serious multi-vehicle collision or fatalities. The evasive driving and defensive actions taken by the vehicle that was cut off likely prevented a major collision. Video included from driver.
